How exciting! A new family member will be joining your family! But where do you start? How do you prepare for what is sure to be a wonderful yet overwhelming experience? Don’t worry - we’re here to help!
Find a Vet You Trust
Before bringing your new dog home, it’s important to establish care with a local veterinary office you trust. Many offices are currently experiencing staffing shortages, resulting in limited appointment availability. Ensuring you have a first exam on the books prior to bringing your dog home will be incredibly helpful. The vet will help you ensure your new family member is healthy and on the track to a long, happy life! We would also recommend scoping out the emergency veterinary office closest to you, and saving their contact information should you need it.
Prepare Your Home
Whether you’re adopting an adult dog, or bringing home a puppy it’s important to prepare your home. Remove hazards such as electrical chords, medications, toxic plants, chemicals, and anything you wouldn’t want chewed up by a puppy. The first few days at home can be overwhelming, and we recommend setting up a quiet space in your home to allow your new pup a few days to decompress. Turning a bathroom or spare bedroom into a little “suite” for your dog, with things like a crate, bed, toys, etc, can make a world of difference. If you have other pets a few days of isolation can also ensure your pets are afforded slow, stress free introductions and are not exposed to any illnesses that your new dog might be experiencing especially if asymptomatic.

Arguably the most enjoyable part of bringing a new puppy home is the shopping spree! We at Raw Rations have everything you need, from crates to food to collars. Finding the Right Food
The food world can be overwhelming, but we're here to help. When new dogs come home, they may be a bit picky about their food. Finding a few options that they enjoy is a great way to keep them interested in eating. Most dogs are accustomed to their previous food, so it's advisable to gradually transition them to the new food you've chosen. Keeping some wet or raw food on hand can also be helpful in enticing them to eat if they are being finicky.
Adjustment Time
Bringing home a new dog is an exciting experience, but it’s important to remember that the transition can be overwhelming for them. We like to follow the 3-3-3 rule, which refers to the first three days, three weeks, and three months after bringing your new friend home. During the first three days, the dog may feel stressed or overwhelmed. You might notice signs such as hiding, barking, or reluctance to eat. It’s essential to establish a consistent routine for them, including scheduled potty breaks, meal times, and designated areas for napping and sleeping. After three weeks, dogs generally start to feel more comfortable and familiar with their routine. Their true personalities often begin to emerge during this time. By the end of three months, most dogs feel fully adjusted, secure, and have formed a bond with the entire family. They typically understand that they are home and start to exhibit a sense of belonging.
Enroll in Training Classes or Sports
One of the best ways to build confidence with your dog, and quickly form a bond is by training! There are tons of trainers to choose from, including local kennel clubs, private trainers, pet store classes, and virtual trainers who offer video consults. Everyone learns differently, so it’s important to find a trainer whose ideology you agree with, and style of training you understand. Enrolling in trick training or getting started with dog sports can also be an incredible way to connect with your dog and provide enrichment. Every dog, no matter their age, can benefit from training.
Enjoy Your New Friend
There is no right or wrong way to welcome a new dog to your family. Above all else, remember this is supposed to be a fun experience! Take lots of pictures, make memories, and enjoy your best friend. And if you need anything, remember we are here to help!
